Desi Boyz

Starring: Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Deepika Padukone, Chitrangda Singh, Omi Vaidya, and others.
Director: Rohit Dhawan

Entertaining time with these Desi Boyz promising full value for money. Because Jr Dhawan manages to engage you at all times. Be it with his drama, romantic scenes or classroom antics. The dialogues are super witty in bits, and the screenplay near perfect. The two leading ladies, Deepika Padukone and Chitrangada Singh provide the oomph factor and in fact you later realize that they are sparingly used and it is only Rocco and Hunter (more of them later) who pull off the show.

The movie is set in the year is 2009. The place: London. The world has witnessed a meltdown and recession is at its peak. Nick (John Abraham) and Jerry (Akshay Kumar) are best buddies who share the same home. Nick is an investment banker and Jerry manages to make ends meet doing odd jobs. He has a nephew, his sister's son, who has lost his parents. Jerry is responsible for his upbringing. The state is keeping a close watch on his abilities to care for a kid. The recession has both these buddies jobless. Nick has to maintain a high-end girlfriend Radhika (Deepika Padukone), who he has just given a diamond ring to, while Jerry has to pay his nephews bills.

Both decide to become male escorts (primarily to help Jerry's nephew) to Sanjay Dutt's Desi Boyz and there is one rule they set: "No sex." Money flows, nephew is taken care of while Radhika is blissfully unaware of Rocco and Hunter's (Jerry and Nick's new identities) nocturnal activities. Until YouTube pops up their 'job profile'!

It's break-up time for the two and nephew is sent to a foster home. Nick pushes Jerry out of his home and into the college campus to complete his graduation. First half is well established. The mood and motive is firmly in place.

There is that special something that really makes the film tick. Is it the Dhawan magic, or Rocco and Hunter's escapades or Radhika and Tanya (Chitrangada's) timely introductions into scenes? Even though you may call it the typical Bollywood flick, there is that 'X' factor which, I feel, will help it make safely through the first week.

John and Akshay, after GARAM MASALA, team up again and both are good. Deepika is moving confidently from film to film and establishing her credentials as an actress to be reckoned with in the Top 5 category. Chitrangada manages to impress in her brief role while Sanju baba, walks in with attitude, and leaves receiving the maximum taalis.

The mix is good and it's sure to create a buzz if not a furor at the Box-office.
